Subject: Square Dancing

 

Grade Level: 4th-8th

Student Standards being Taught:  

  • Demonstrate aerobic movement skills and the performance of original dance routines.

  • Explain the importance of repetition and practice as a means for skill improvement.

  • Demonstrate dances used for social and recreational enjoyment and physical fitness enhancement.

 

 

Objectives :

  • Physical - The students will successfully perform the calls of Square Dancing.

 

  • Affective - The students will cooperate effectively with each other and encourage each other in the calls in their square formation.

  • Cognitive - Students will verbally recall the calls of Square Dancing.

 

 

Introductory Activities:

  • Roll call- Students will sit in their assign spot in their squad lines.

  • Warm-up: The students will perform various exercises and stretches.

  • Stretching- The students will participate in the following stretches:

  • Quadriceps stretch - while standing, pull foot back with the opposite hand of the foot

  • Calf stretch - place one foot in front of the other with both toes facing forward leaning forward on front foot but keeping back heel down. Both hands are placed on front knee making a straight line with the student’s head, hips and back leg

  • Hamstring stretch - while sitting on the floor, both feet are stretched out in front with knees straight and arms straight out touching their toes. Next have one leg tucked in and the other leg out doing the same thing

  • Triceps stretch - one arm reaching behind their head with the other arm pulling the opposite elbow back

  • Shoulder stretch - arm going across the body and other arm holding it there

  • Wrist stretch - have arm stretched out and one hand pulling the fingers up and back toward the body on the other hand, then pulling them down and back toward the body

  • Safety:          Teacher responsibilities

    • Visually inspect the field for any hazards and take appropriate action.

    • Ensure students are given a proper warm-up.

    • Ensure students are dressed properly for the day’s activity.

 

                                 Student responsibilities

 

  • Take all the instructions from the teacher

  • Keep aware of your surroundings at all time.

 

 

 

Developmental Activities :

 

1.) Students will form their square formation on their spot that was assigned to their group. The teacher will explain and demonstrate the calls for Square Dancing.  (3 minutes)

  • Gentleman is on the Left side

  • Partner is on the Right side

  • Keep your eyes and head up, facing the opposite couple and your shoulder is right against your partner.

  • Gentleman is holding his partner’s hand in an offering fashion.

  • Each couple is awaiting the explanation and demonstration for the day’s new calls.

 

 

2.) Listening (8 minutes)

  • While students are still in square formation teacher will explain and demonstrate the new calls.

 

  • Partner: The partner is always the person on the gentleman’s right hand side as he faces the center of the set or square.

  • Honors: Both Dancers turn slightly toward each other and acknowledges with a slight bow from the waist.

  • Shuffle Step or Walk: A comfortable, effortless shuffle done in time with the beat of the music.

  • Circle Left or Right: Three or more dancers turn slightly to face the left or right and walk forward using the rhythmic shuffle step.

  • Forward and Back: A designed move that couples use to forward toward the center three steps, pause, then back three steps and blend into the next movement.

  • Home: The spot where the dancers start and end following each call.

  • Do Sa Do: Two dancers facing each other advance and pass right shoulders. Each moves to the right in back of the other person and without turning.

  • Swing: Two dancers stand right stand to right side facing in opppostie directions. The man holds the lady’s right hand in his left, puts his right hand with the lady’s to put her left hand.

 

 

                         

Culminating Activities:

1.) Have the students sit in their square formation while the teachers reviews what the students learned.

  • What are the new calls of Square Dancing?

  • What was the most challenging call to learn? What did you have to do in order to execute that call?

 

 

 

Evaluation of the Day’s Objectives:

  • Students will review the past calls and the new calls while performing in their assigned square formation.

 

Modifications for Special Needs:

  • Modifications will be made depending on the disability of the individual.

  • Tommy has a cast on his leg. He can assist the teacher and help with the music.
